Hossler shot a four under round of 68 on the second day of the tournament in Texas to move to 11 under overall and secure a one-shot advantage over fellow American Fowler. Hatton lost to Hoffman 3 and 2 on Friday, setting up the playoff with Brendan since both had finished round-robin play with 2 wins and a loss.

The Houston victor will earn the last spot in the Masters, if not already exempt, and Hossler is among those dreaming of a late ticket to the year's first major.

Looming at 11-under par is two players already qualified for the Masters and they are Sweden's Henrik Stenson and American Matt Kuchar who signed for 69s.

Poulter finally broke out of the logjam at the top thanks to a birdie at the par-three 16th after a superb tee shot to seven feet, and he stretched his lead further at the 17th by curling in a 10-foot birdie putt.

And he may get it in Texas where he got off the ideal start, hitting a wedge to five feet at the 10th before making the birdie putt to get into the red straight away. He is joined by Sam Ryder, Abraham Ancer and Nicholas Lindheim at 10 under.

At the ANA Inspiration, the first major of the season, Jodi Ewart Shadoff shot a 67 to lie five off the clubhouse lead, set by South Korean Park Sung-Hyun.

"I'm in a no-lose situation", Poulter said. "So at this point anything else is icing on the cake". But I don't have to (shoot) 8 or 9 under. The Houston Open is always fun because of how they structure the course similar to Augusta National and it becomes easy to think we can project who's going to kill at the Masters based on how Houston goes.

"This was excellent. I feel great things are coming". Phil Mickelson did well to produce an identical Saturday tally to Rose, given the appearance of a triple bogey and double bogey on his scorecard. He hit into the water twice on the hole. Still, Spieth is familiar with Hossler's game. It's no surprise that he's (on) top. The victor on Sunday will join them, if not previously exempt. I haven't won a stroke play event on the PGA Tour and I'm in a position where I've got an opportunity to.

"I've been driving the ball very well this year", said Mickelson, who will be in pursuit of a fourth Green Jacket from Thursday.
