It has been revealed that Cristiano Ronaldo took a less conventional method of preparation before he scored his side decisive penalty against Juventus in their UEFA Champions League quarter final clash.

And Madrid captain for the night, Marcelo, took the opportunity to take a pop at Spanish rivals Barcelona after his side's victory.

And the greatest drama of all came in the third minute of added time, when referee Michael Oliver saw a push on Madrid substitute Lucas Vazquez by Juve defender Mehdi Banatia, with the English official sending off Buffon before Ronaldo hammered the spot kick into the net to send the defending champions through to the last four.

The penalty, awarded for a foul by Medhi Benatia on Lucas Vazquez, was greeted with howls of protest. "We did not play well, we must admit it, and it should be a lesson for the future", he said.

Madrid won the first leg 3-0 in Turin last week, when Ronaldo scored with a spectacular bicycle kick for his second goal of the match. He celebrated by taking off his shirt and running toward the euphoric Madrid crowd.

The early strike offered the visitors hope of repeating compatriots AS Roma's incredible second-leg turnaround against Barcelona the previous night and the Croatian struck again in the 37th minute, heading beyond Navas, who got a hand to the shot but could not prevent it going in.

However, Cristiano Ronaldo was the hero for the home side, converting a controversial 97th-minute penalty. The 40-year-old was more reflective later, and appeared to confirm that the game, his 117th Champions League appearance, was also his last in the tournament.

"It's a step away from the final", Bayern winger Arjen Robben said.
