The senators also want details on the process and timeline for adjudicating Porter's security clearance process, including interactions between the White House and the Federal Bureau of Investigation a year ago.

Kushner met with Apollo founder Joshua Harris in the White House multiple times past year and even discussed the possibility of a White House job for Harris, sources told the newspaper.

A third official, also speaking on condition of anonymity, said Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein recently passed new information to White House Counsel Don McGahn that led to the slowing or stopping of Kushner's pending clearance application.

Apollo's $184 million loan in November was aimed at refinancing the mortgage on a Chicago skyscraper, while Citigroup's $325 million amount in the spring of 2017 was directed at financing office buildings in Brooklyn, the Times said.

Even those within the White House have been waiting for the other shoe to drop on Kushner and his shady dealings.

Apollo defended its move in extending the loan to Kushner to the New York Times.

Kushner's complex business dealings in Israel and worldwide - some of which he divested from upon entering the White House - are raising questions about how he has been exposed to conflicts of interest.

"Those involved in the process again have confirmed that there are dozens of people at Mr. Kushner's level whose process is delayed, that it is not uncommon for these clearance reviews to take this long in a new administration, and that the current backlogs are now being addressed", said Peter Mirijanian, a Kushner spokesman.

In light of the new allegations, Kushner now appears to be embroiled in one controversy after another.

However, a spokesperson for Kushner Companies denied receiving any such letter of request while describing Kushner Companies as a "multibillion enterprise that is extremely financially strong". Prior to our CEO voluntarily resigning to serve our country, we never had any type of inquiries. "These types of inquiries appear to be harassment exclusively for political reasons". The final decision on the matter according to Trump was apparently left to his Chief of Staff.

Likewise, Kushner had meetings with Citigroup's top exec Michael Corbat - to discuss financial and trade policy, several sources told The Times.

The security clearance of 37-year-old Kushner, who is also Trumps senior adviser, was downgraded after months of delays in completing his background check, the reports said.

His clearance was reduced to the level of secret and his official portfolio inside the West Wing, especially with regard to his globe-trotting foreign affairs work on behalf of Mr Trump, is expected to be sharply reduced as well, the sources said.

Mueller learned that Kushner directed a campaign to combat the Obama administration's eleventh-hour effort in December 2016 to pass an anti-settlement resolution through the UN Security Council.

The narrative surrounding Kushner's business and political affairs have kept the attention of special counsel Robert Mueller, who is conducting a broad inquiry into whether Russian Federation and people in Trump's orbit cooperated in efforts to interfere in the 2016 United States election.
