During the 90th Academy Awards telecast, Netflix released the first trailer for the last season of House of Cards. Kevin Spacey's fall from grace should, by all rights, have killed the series stone dead.

Kevin Spacey was sacked by Netflix after the sexual harassment claims were made against the actor past year.

"Hail to the Chief" reads the next title card, leaving no question as to who is President in the House of Cards universe now.

Instead, as the first House of Cards season 6 trailer reveals, the show will re-focused around his wife, Claire Underwood.

Spacey was sacked in November after multiple allegations of sexual harassment and assault.

"House of Cards" is just getting started. Princess Buttercup deserves way more credit than she gets, and there's a sense of inevitability about her taking the limelight for this final season.

It's certainly not the direction Netflix meant to take the show but given the circumstances and how the fifth season ended, it allows Netflix to give the series a proper send off.

The series announced the sixth season would be its last in October after Spacey was accused of sexual misconduct.

"Netflix will not be involved with any further production of House of Cards that includes Kevin Spacey", a Netflix spokesperson said in a statement.

The show's final series, which is targeting a return this Autumn, is set to be the shortest in Netflix history with only eight episodes scheduled to debut.
