"A trainwreck of a sci-fi flick bent on extending a franchise that should have died a peaceful death nearly exactly one decade ago, Julius Onah's The Cloverfield Paradox follows the lead of the far-superior 10 Cloverfield Lane in imagining a Cloverfield spinoff whose genre ingredients have little to do with the original found-footage, giant-monster flick". At the moment, The Cloverfield Paradox has a Rotten Tomatoes score of just 11 percent (it was 9 percent at one point).

The unprecedented move to debut on Netflix came during the infamous Superbowl TV spots which announced that the film would be available to watch in its entirety straight after the game.

City-destroying monster movie Cloverfield made $171 million (£121m) worldwide on a $25m budget and very little marketing, while claustrophobic thriller 10 Cloverfield Lane grossed $110m from an even smaller budget.

Director Ava DuVernay also shared her excitement for Cloverfield Paradox on Twitter, where she called the film and its release a "gamechanger". In the meantime, The Cloverfield Paradox is streaming now.

Yet critics who stayed up to watch the film (directed by Julius Onah and starring an ensemble cast including Gugu Mbatha-Raw, David Oyelowo, and Elizabeth Debicki) weren't very impressed.

The Cloverfield Paradox Review – A Fascinating But Wildly Uneven Entry

The J.J. Abrams-produced project has been kept under wraps at Paramount Pictures - a strategy used for previous instalments Cloverfield (2008) and 10 Cloverfield Lane (2016) - but Netflix had not been involved in such releases before. J. J. Abrams is serving as a producer through his Bad Robot Productions banner with Lindsey Weber. Paradox explains how they entered our reality when the crew onboard the Cloverfield space station fired up the Shepard particle accelerator, hoping to create a global power source and solve an energy crisis. When will the movie first be available for streaming? The film is about a group of astronauts who are subjected to unusual and mysterious events out in space.

Rumours Netflix would pick up the film first surfaced last month.

What are other ways you think The Cloverfield Paradox connects to the other films?

The Cloverfield Paradox cameos of Pegg and Grunberg aren't the only actors to make voice-only cameos in a Cloverfield film.
