Snow warnings issued as Beast from the East edges toward Yorkshire

Met Office forecasters have also said there is "likely" to be "significant" snowfall next week as temperatures in the United Kingdom plummet.

The alert is the third highest of the four levels issued by the Met Office and "requires social and healthcare services to target specific actions at high-risk groups".

Britons are starting to feel the chill as a cold front sweeps in from Russian Federation to deliver what is forecast to be the coldest late February in five years.

The weather front is created by high pressure over Scandinavia and easterly winds.

A fresh winter blast is set to arrive from Monday onwards, with showers or longer periods of snow set to affect eastern parts of the United Kingdom during Tuesday.

The cold snap could last well into March, the agency warns.

It's part of a weather phenomenon known as a Sudden Stratospheric Warming.

Met √Čireann has already issued a Status Yellow weather warning for the entire country.

For the best part of the next week, temperatures will rarely, if ever, rise to double figures while regularly dropping below zero, with Met √Čireann warning of "exceptionally cold" conditions and widespread wintry showers by early next week.
