On January 30, Donald Trump will deliver his first State of the Union address in front of a joint sessions of the United States Congress. Kennedy, 37, is serving his third term in the House.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., offered praise for Kennedy and Guzman.

They say Kennedy is "a relentless fighter for working Americans". Trump had just taken office previous year, so his address next Tuesday evening will be the Republican president's first state of the union speech. "Our vision for this union is guided by a simple belief that equality and economic dignity should be afforded to every American". "This immigrant is charged with responding in Spanish to Trump during the State of the Union", she wrote in Spanish on Twitter after the announcement, later adding that she was "proud to be a Democrat". "I'm honored to have been chosen by Leader Pelosi and Leader Schumer to deliver our party's response".

The congressman, who is the grandson of Robert Kennedy, will follow in the footsteps of his great-uncle Edward Kennedy, who delivered the response to Ronald Reagan's address in 1982.

Virginia Del. Elizabeth Guzman, who made history previous year by becoming the first Hispanic female immigrant to be elected to the Virginia House of Delegates, will give the Democrats' response in Spanish.

Kennedy will be the first MA politician to deliver the response since 1985, when then-House Speaker Thomas (Tip) O'Neill joined Bill Clinton (who was Arkansas governor at the time) and then-Florida Gov.

Speaking to the Boston Globe, Mr Kennedy said: "From healthcare to economic justice to civil rights, the Democratic agenda stands in powerful contrast to President Trump's broken promises to American families".
