Oscar nominations: the biggest snubs and surprises

The nomination gives Plummer his third Best Supporting Actor nod this decade, a category he won for his role in "Beginners". Call Me By Your Name is nominated for Best Picture so it'll be interesting to see if Logan can beat it or any of the other films but it's a massive achievement that writer and director James Mangold managed to accomplish breaking into this category alone.

"Get Out", Jordan Peele's modern racial satire told in the form of a thriller, won directing and screenplay nominations on top of a coveted best picture nod.

Guillermo Del Toro's fantasy thriller romance, "The Shape of Water", about a mute cleaning lady drawn into an otherworldly love affair, got nominations including nearly all of the major categories - Best picture, Best director, Best actress, Best supporting actor and Best supporting actress.

The film hit Mexican cinemas two weekends ago, rising to the top of the domestic box office and earning 61.2 million pesos (just under United States $3.5 million) on its opening weekend.

The awards will be presented in Hollywood on March 4, hosted for a second year by late night TV star Jimmy Kimmel.

Both Hanks and Franco, who were in contention for Best Actor nomination, were left out by the Academy while Daniel Kaluuya earned his maiden nod for "Get Out".

Nearly a century after the Academy Awards began, Rachel Morrison made Hollywood history yesterday in becoming the first woman to be nominated as best cinematographer for the Mississippi-set drama, Mudbound. If I were an Oscar voter, Meryl Streep's Oscar nomination-her 21st!-would have gone to Phantom Thread's Vicky Krieps. He also could be the first black man or woman to win for best original screenplay. Of course, there are omissions - the year-defining Wonder Woman was absent even from technical categories, the trailblazing Mudbound was not one of the two surprises in best picture (that honour went to Darkest Hour and Phantom Thread).

This year's Oscar nominations, announced overnight, were a charged affair.

Disney's blockbuster live-action remake of Beauty and the Beast starring Harry Potter's own Hermione Granger, Emma Watson scored nods for Best Production Design as well as Best Costumes. Two years in a row of diversified acting nominees don't quite make a trend.

"I'm thrilled that our film has received seven nominations from the Academy, and that the lovely work of our editor Jon Gregory, our composer Carter Burwell, my gentle brothers-in-arms Woody Harrelson and Sam Rockwell, and our fearless leader Frances McDormand, have all been recognised so wonderfully". However, just before the Oscar nominations were due Franco was accused for multiple accounts of sexual assault.

For best actor, Day-Lewis will battle for a golden statuette with Timothee Chalamet ("Call Me by Your Name"), Daniel Kaluuya ("Get Out"), Gary Oldman ("Darkest Hour") and Denzel Washington ("Roman J. Israel, Esq."). It scored four nominations. He can now tack on another descriptor: Oscar nominee for best picture.

"I am so delighted for us all".

Actor Doug Sally Hawkins attends the premiere of "The Shape of Water" in Los Angeles, California, U.S. November 15, 2017.
