In a subsequent tweet, Sanders said the White House had approached The Wall Street Journal on Friday for a correction, but they refused to do it.

On Thursday, WSJ reported that Trump said, "I probably have a very good relationship with Kim Jong-un".

Since the start of 2018, Trump and the press have continued their war of words, which was only increased after an interview with the Wall Street Journal who reported that the president claimed that he was in a good relationship with#Kim Jong-un, despite previously insulting the leader of North Korean on several occasions.

Hours after Sanders' post, the Journal said it stood behind its reporting, and posted an excerpt from the audio recording on Twitter.

In the audio, President Trump says the following: "As you know, I have a great relationship with Prime Minister Abe of Japan. I just don't want to comment".

Trump: I don't want to comment on it-I don't want to comment, I'm not saying I have or I haven't.

"North Korea is now in a position where Kim Jong-un is saying, 'No way, I'm not going to give up these nuclear weapons, ' because he doesn't see that credible message coming from the United States that we don't - we're not interested in overthrowing your government. I think you people are surprised". I could give you 20 examples.

"I probably have a very good relationship with Kim Jong Un".

"I'm not saying I have or haven't", Trump said.

Yet people noticed, and after some rumblings from the White House on Saturday night, the WSJ tweeted audio of the conversation to prove that their transcript was accurate.

Trump said Sunday that the reporters "knew exactly what I said and meant", and deliberately misquoted him because "they just wanted a story".

This week's thawing of relations came after Kim, in a New Year's Day address, said he wanted his country to compete in the Olympics.

Washington and Pyongyang are in a stand-off over North Korea's missile and nuclear programmes, which could be used to target the United States and its allies. But if I were them I would try.

On a phone call with South Korean President Moon Jae-in after the talks, Mr Trump suggested he was open to discussion between the U.S. and North Korea as well.
