Three people were injured after a fire broke out in Trump Tower's heating and air conditioning system, New York City fire chiefs have said.

Fire trucks could be seen outside of the building just after 7 smoke wafted off the roof. The president was in Washington DC at the time.

The building is also where Eric and Donald Jr. have their offices, and where Ivanka's eponymous fashion company is headquartered.

The Fire Department said the fire was not inside the building, but on top of it. Flames coming from the vents.

The cause of the blaze is being investigated by the city fire marshal, a department spokesman said. No smoke or fire inside the building. It took about an hour to put out the fire on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan.

The building served as Donald Trump's primary residence and workplace before he took up residence in the White House a year ago.

Roughly 84 firefighters responded to the scene initially.
