The expletive President Donald Trump used in a discussion about immigration in the Oval Office have been projected onto an outer wall of the Trump Hotel in Washington.

Last spring, Bell projected the message "Emoluments welcome" and "Pay Trump bribes here" on the front of the Washington hotel in response to various controversial actions by the president. He tells CNN the projection was up for less than an hour.

US President Donald Trump has been facing strong condemnation at home and overseas after suggesting immigrants from Haiti, El Salvador and Africa were from "shithole countries".

The projections also included the phrases "this is not normal", "the president distracts us from politics that are harming us", "stay vigilant", and "this is not a drill". An arrow, also apparently projected on the building, points to the arched doorway.

But Democratic Senator Richard Durbin said Trump had specifically asked: 'Do we need more Haitians?' before launching into a diatribe about African immigration.

In an interview with CNN, Bell claimed responsibility for the visuals and said the projection work was completed before security arrived.

Democrats and some Republican lawmakers criticized the president's choice of words and called for him to apologize. (He has since denied that he used this phrasing.) The alleged remark has been met with continued backlash, including planned boycotts of Trump's State of the Union address and criticism from the nations named.

His remarks have been decried as racist by African and Haitian politicians, by the United Nations Human Rights Office and by USA politicians from both major parties.

"There is no other word one can use but "racist, '" United Nations human rights spokesman Rupert Colville said, according to Reuters".

"You can not dismiss entire countries and continents as 's***holes, ' whose entire populations, who are not white, are therefore not welcome".
