Gruden will obviously lean on McKenzie and his staff for much of the draft intel this year, but how will his style and opinion impact what the Raiders do strategically, if at all?

In a sense, the end of Jon Gruden's (first) Oakland Raiders career helped launch the beginning of Tom Brady's.

"Everybody knows I've been infatuated with him or whatever to get him here, but they really didn't know how deep our conversations were going, how far along we were in that to make it happen", Davis said. "As a coach, I was traded, I've been fired, I miss the game terribly, but I really miss the Raiders". I've always loved football, I've wanted to come back, I've prepared to come back. "I never thought I'd be back, but here I am and I'm ready to get to work".

When it was first reported that Jon Gruden would return to Oakland and coach the Raiders, several media members said the team planned a "splashy" press conference to announce the hire.

Nonetheless, we do know Gruden won't shy away from having uncomfortable discussions and shaking up the roster in order to put the Raiders back in postseason contention. Oakland A's manager Bob Melvin arrive for the Jon Gruden presser. He notched six catches, 50 yards and a touchdown for the Buccaneers as a wideout, mainly making his impact as a special teams player. "No guarantees, no promises, but I want to win".

But if Tuesday was about a clean slate for everyone, nobody will be more impacted by the arrival of Gruden than Carr, and how he responds to the insanity of which his new coach refers will go a long way in determining how fast the Raiders are again winning more games than not. Prior to that, he mentored the Raiders for four seasons from 1998 to 2001.

"This is an organization I want to be a part of", Gruden said.

Brown and Long, two Raiders legends who played through the franchise's previous relocations, also stiff-armed talk about the coaching challenges Gruden will face with the Vegas move.

Gruden seemed determined not to mention, let alone trumpet, the team's scheduled and NFL-approved relocation to Las Vegas, probably in 2020. "That's going to be awesome", Brown said, laughing. He's going to pick Carr's game apart before putting it back together, and Carr, a consummate professional on so many levels, is going to take that coaching and learn from it. "So I'm anxious to sit down with Marshawn and meet with him and talk about his future with the Raiders". Long, a rookie in 1981, spent only one season in Oakland before the team moved south.

During the NFL's latest media briefing on Friday, I posed this question to league spokesman Joe Lockhart: Is a team permitted to reach a deal in principle with a new head coach before firing its current head coach? That led Davis to decide to cut ties with Del Rio and finalize a deal with Gruden.

We're just here for the show, and I think the show is going to be awesome. Was being on the road every week a factor? This time around we are getting a wiser Gruden.

Davis got the coach he's yearned for the past six years, since assuming control after the death of his father, Al Davis.

"This is very emotional for me", Gruden said.

"Everybody knows that I've been infatuated to get him here", Davis said.
