Mumbai rains: Schools, colleges closed as Cyclone Ockhi threat looms

During the day, when nearly the entire state experienced a wet spell, Amit Shah's campaign meetings in Rajula town in Amreli district and in Mahuva and Shihor towns in Bhavnagar district were cancelled.

Due to the impact of the cyclone, Mumbai and its suburbs received rains since Tuesday morning, but the weather eased by afternoon even as a hailstorm lashed some sections of the Munbai-Pune Expressway.

While Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi held a poll rally in Anjar but his three rallies in Morbi, Dhrangadhra and Surendranagar were cancelled due to the impending cyclone.

Cyclonic Ockhi, whose landfall is expected Tuesday midnight along the Gujarat coast, has brought some much-needed calm to the election campaigns in the State.

"Our karyakartas (workers) should devote themselves to providing all possible assistance and stand shoulder to shoulder with fellow citizens", he added further.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has tweeted regarding Cyclone Ockchi, asking the Gujarat government to be ready for the extended support to help out people.

Cyclone Ochki has claimed lives of 39 people from the state of Tamil Nadu and Kerala.

While 33 tourists, both domestic and foreign, were safe in Lakshadweep, 250 fishermen could also reach safely in the islands from the high seas after being hit by the cyclone.
