It added that Hamas is the authority governing the Gaza Strip and as such is responsible for everything happening there.

Hamas has built a sophisticated network of terror tunnels in the Gaza Strip and running into Israel, used for storing weapons, smuggling and terrorist infiltrations into Israel.

Israeli soldiers' gunfire wounded six Palestinian men east of Khan Younis in southern Gaza Strip, adding one was shot in abdomen and is in critical condition, Ashraf al-Qedra, spokesman of Gaza's Health Ministry told reporters.

During the 2014 summer war with Israel, Hamas terrorists on several occasions made their way into Israel through terror tunnels, although they did not manage to reach civilian areas. He said forces had detected the tunnel months ago and continued to monitor construction efforts by Hamas militants before demolishing it.

"There seems to be a change, a paradigm here in how these terror tunnels will be able to threaten us in the future", he said.

Shortly afterwards, the army said it had identified a second launch from the Hamas-controlled enclave, but had not yet identified where it landed.

It is the second terror tunnel neutralized in recent weeks.

Conricus described the tunnel as "very substantial", saying it contained communication systems, air vents, electricity and reinforced concrete structure.

The announcement, cleared by Israeli censors who had previously barred reports of detection work around the central Gaza frontier, followed a surge of Palestinian unrest in response to last week's USA recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital. Dozens of protestors in Gaza set fire to US flags and pictures of Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. On Friday, two protesters were shot dead in skirmishes with Israeli troops along Gaza's border.

"Our battle for Jerusalem is going on round the clock, above and under the ground", the statement said.
