Approximately 60 pounds of high grade marijuana were found Tuesday, Dec. 19, during a traffic stop initiated by the York County Sheriff's Department on Interstate 80 - and the elderly couple transporting it claimed they meant to give it away as Christmas gifts.

On Tuesday, York County sheriff's deputies discovered an unconventional Mr. and Mrs. Clause. Police immediately noticed the "strong odor of raw marijuana", the York News Times reports, and promptly found 60 (!) pounds and $336,000-worth ($336,000!) of pot in the vehicle.

Patrick Jiron, 80, was arrested and booked into the York County Jail on charges of possession of marijuana with the intent to deliver and having no drug tax stamp, the News-Times said.

The police found 60 lbs. of marijuana as well as containers of concentrated THC, the chemical in marijuana that gets people high.

Sheriff's officers spotted the couple's truck crossing the center line and failing to signal, so they pulled it over. They were headed to Vermont.

While multiple states have legalized marijuana, Nebraska has not. An attempt to legalise some medical uses for marijuana for seriously ill patients was introduced in the state in 2015, but blocked in the legislature.

The couple is said to have told the local sheriff's department that "they didn't know it was illegal to transport marijuana in Nebraska". "Legalization of marijuana for any objective has proven to be a risky proposition because the controls placed on its use in other states have fallen short".

The department estimated the pounds of green were worth over $300,000. He posted bond and was released from jail.
