In India, over 150,000 women are newly diagnosed with breast cancer every year; a staggering number that has overtaken cervical cancer to become the most common cancer affecting women.

The majority of women in the study had surgery - either a lumpectomy that removes malignant tissue while sparing the rest of the breast or a mastectomy that removes the entire breast.

For more than four decades, cervical cancer was considered as one of the leading causes of death in India.

Self-examination is not enough to detect early-stage breast cancer, the Health Promotion Administration (HPA) said, urging women to get regular mammograms as recommended by the WHO.

In addition to the Methylobacterium finding, the study, which was published online in Oncotarge, discovered that cancer patients' urine samples had increased levels of other bacteria, including Staphylococcus and Actinomyces, although it is unclear if they have a role in breast cancer.

Approximately 252,710 new cases of breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed in 2017, according to the American Cancer Society, with 81 percent being diagnosed in women aged 50 and older.

The test results can be combined with information on breast density, factors such as age the woman gave birth - all of which can pinpoint percentage risks of developing breast cancer within 10 years, and throughout their lifetime.

For many patients, missed work meant missed income.

After getting treatment, the cancer is now under control, the official said. BRCA for the record, has been christened the "Angelina Jolie Gene", when she revealed that she had gone through breast cancer surgery.

Too often, discussions women have with their doctors about the best treatment options don't include a conversation about the employment impact, said Dr. Benjamin Smith, of the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. All treatments are individualized for what that particular patient needs.
