Perhaps no one celebrated quite like Benjamin Mendy after Manchester City broke the deadlock at Stamford Bridge on Saturday. "The City forward was in Holland on his day off and has sustained injuries".

City hoped the problem would not be serious, and there was even talk of a fitness test prior to Tuesday's Champions League clash with Shakhtar Donetsk, but it is worse than initially thought. I think our task now is just to support him (Mendy) and just to be there if he needs something from us.

"I don't know, we will wait until Thursday, but I am pretty sure it will be longer than we would like, unfortunately".

"No way", Guardiola said about his chances of playing against Chelsea.

The 23-year-old suffered the injury following a challenge from Andros Townsend during the first half of last weekend's 5-0 win over Crystal Palace at the Etihad Stadium.

City had signed the left-back for a world-record fee (for a defender) for £52 million in the summer from Monaco and the powerful Frenchman had settled well in Manchester and made the left-back slot his own with a series of impressive performances.

On Wednesday, the coach of Manchester City, Pep Guardiola had described the absence of his player of "major setback" for his team, not excluding the recruitment of another side left in the mercato of winter.

The Spaniard was asked whether he would consider looking for a replacement left-back in January and replied: "We will see in January".
