When is Eid al-Adha 2017?

Muslims in Brooklyn are preparing to celebrate Eid al-Adha, the Feast of the Sacrifice, which begins tonight at sundown.

The start of this festival depends on the sighting of the new crescent moon and also the celebrations differ in different countries around the world. In this annual religious event, Muslims find their way to Mecca in Saudi Arabia to pay homage to the Ka'ba, which is believed to have been built by Ibrahim during the Biblical times.

A Kenyan government minister on Wednesday said employers could allow Muslim workers a day off to mark the coming Eid al-Adha Islamic holiday.

As we celebrate Canada 150, Eid al-Adha is also an opportunity to recognize the many contributions of Canada's Muslim communities to our rich and diverse society. This year the date for Eid al-adha has been confirmed on September 1-2.

Eid al-Adha honors Prophet Abraham's willingness to sacrifice his son Ishmael, an act of submission of God's command.

"May this occasion invigorate you to remain steadfast in our task of ensuring triumph against elements that perpetuate discord and violence", he said in his Feast of the Sacrifice message.

The 66 unhealthy animals consisted of six cows, five sheep and 55 goats. Traditionally, a portion of the meat is distributed to relatives and those in need. Muslims greet each other and go to mosques dressed in their best clothes to attend prayer service.

Id-ul-Zuha is a festival that is celebrated with traditional fervor and gaiety in India and the world.
