Davinson Sanchez, the 21-year-old Ajax defender, is set to arrive in a deal that could eventually rise to £42 million, according to The Guardian.

Tottenham have signed defender Davinson Sanchez from Ajax in a reported club record £42m deal, subject to a medical and a work permit.

This prompted Spurs to step-up their pursuit and the Evening Standard say the north Londoners sent club officials to Amsterdam on Monday to try and thrash out a deal with Ajax.

The Colombian global has attracted lots of interest from the Premier League with Football London reporting recently that Arsenal and Chelsea had joined Tottenham in the race to sign Sanchez.

More than that, however, he should benefit from the tutelage of Tottenham's Argentine genius of a manager, Mauricio Pochettino.

Sanchez will succeed Moussa Sissoko as Tottenham's record signing.

He is Spurs' first addition after a frustrating summer so far, in which Kyle Walker was sold to Manchester City for £50m last month.

Through most of the summer transfer window of 2017, Tottenham Hotspur has resisted the urge to spend its share of the Premier League's vast television contract.

He made 47 appearances for the Dutch side, scoring seven goals.

Eriksen was 21 when he joined Spurs in 2013 but he had been a regular for club and country since Jol gave him a debut aged 17.

"Toby is like other players", Pochettino said.

"He didn't play for Atletico but he knew he had to be tougher". Under Pochettino, young prospects like Dele Alli and Eric Dyer have flourished into their respective forms, and that's without even thinking about Harry Kane turning into the best striker in England last season.
