Among historic foes of Columbus statues is the Ku Klux Klan (KKK), the National Christopher Columbus Association (NCCA) noted.

De Blasio, who is running for re-election in November, said during the Democratic mayoral debate on Wednesday night that the Columbus statue is one of the city's artifacts under review in the push to remove so-called symbols of hate.

Mayor de Blasio's call for reviews of various historical figures comes after the deadly events in Charlotesville, Virginia earlier this month where a rally was held to protest the removal of a Confederate statue.

"It's Columbus today and who knows who will be on this secret list tomorrow", Staten Island Councilman Joe Borelli told CBS on Thursday.

'I will wait for the commission, as I said Christopher Columbus is a controversial figure to many of us particularly in the Caribbean and I think that that has to be looked at, when you have to look at history we have to look at it thoroughly and clearly, ' CBS reported her as saying Monday. Columbus did perpetrate genocide against Native American groups like the Taino, who inhabited the island of Hispaniola before he landed there in 1492.

"We have to look at everything", de Blasio said.

Catholics in cities across the country experienced discrimination back in the '20s, The Catholic News Agency noted in a 2016 report.

'New York, of all American cities, which boasts such important Jewish history and claims such a present day vibrant Jewish community, should take the lead in denouncing Stuyvesant's bigotry'.

"I see Christopher Columbus being a symbol of Italian American contributions to our nation", he said. "We will continue to do so and we will continue to fight to make sure that Columbus Circle remains Columbus Circle".

"It's quite hard to adjudicate Christopher Columbus, the man who lived in the 1400s, and to use today's constructs for the purposes of adjudicating what type of man he was", said Castorina, who was joined by members of the Order Sons of Italy in America.

The congressman wants to bring the Columbus statue to Great Kills because it's federal land and de Blasio has zero jurisdiction.

Joseph Guagliardo, chairman and CEO for the Conference of Presidents of Major Italian-American Organizations, blasted the speaker Sunday over the airwaves.

"What it suggests is the memory of the Italian-Americans that contributed to building this city, the very buildings that we engage in commerce in, that government sits in", the assemblyman said.
