Meira Kumar, Gopalkrishna Gandhi to hold interactive session with non-NDA MPs

The JD-U had broken ranks with the opposition on the presidential election when it made a decision to support the ruling NDA's nominee Ram Nath Kovind.

As was the case with its presidential candidate Ram Nath Kovind, a Dalit seen as a surprise pick, the party might go for a face that will help it politically.

Kumar said Prime Minister Narendra Modi hoped that the upcoming Parliament session proves to be fruitful and all the Opposition parties continue to cooperate. He tried to put all speculations to rest, saying that whatever parliamentary board will decide, is going to be final. For the August 5 vice presidential elections, Naidu will file his papers tomorrow as it is the last date for making nominations. I'm not aspiring to become anything, party finally decides about the candidature. He will now take on the opposition candidate, Gopalkrishna Gandhi, whose name was announced by a clutch of 18 parties on July 13.

Party sources said Naidu will be suitable as he will have the additional responsibility to run the Rajya Sabha as chairman of the house of elders.

Naidu has served twice as BJP President and has been a member of the Rajya Sabha for four terms. The names of Naidu and Maharashtra governor Vidyasagar Rao have been doing the rounds as probables to be the next vice-president.

Naidu holds the charge of urban development, housing and poverty alleviation, and information and broadcasting ministries in the Union government.

Meanwhile, tThe election to choose Indias 14th President saw nearly 100 per cent voting on Monday with Lok Sabha Secretary and Returning Officer Anoop Mishra terming it "probably the highest turnout ever". Has also served as the President of the party between 2002 and 2004.
