Henrik Lundqvist of the Rangers, who used to be the league's highest-paid goalie until Price inked his extension, also has wonderful NHL and global credits, including a Vezina Trophy and Olympic Gold Medal.

The deal will include up to $70 million in signing bonuses according to TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun. There was the run to the 2014 Eastern Conference Final, cut short for him when Rangers' forward Chris Kreider barreled into Price in Game One and knocked him out of the playoffs. "There's a saying we use: 'Goalies are not important until you don't have one.'".

A new deal for Price was nearly a certainty for the Canadiens, who have continued to retool their team for a run at a Stanley Cup.

The $10.5 million cap hit ties him with Chicago Blackhawks stars Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane for the biggest in the league until Connor McDavid's new contract with the Edmonton Oilers is signed. The British Columbia native said he never considered finishing his career in the west and that he was ecstatic to sign long term.

Most of the money that will be paid out to Price will come as a signing bonus.

Both unrestricted free agents have received offers from their previous clubs - Marleau has a two-year deal on the table from San Jose, while Radulov has a four-year offer from Montreal.

"We feel we're ready to take the next step, " Jets general manager general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff said.

On the worldwide stage, Price backstopped Canada to the gold medal at the 2007 world junior championship, the 2014 Games and the World Cup of Hockey last fall. Despite his brilliance, Price has not been able to get good-not great-teams over the hump, so far. I mean, we're not going to start inventing players that aren't there.

While at the time the contract was viewed by some as risky, Price has more than lived up to his end of the deal.
