"I was pinned down in right field".

Barton, of Ennis, south of Dallas, is the manager of the Republican congressional baseball team. They themselves were injured, as was House Whip Steve Scalise, who is now in critical condition. Capitol Hill police officers Crystal Griner and David Bailey, who were assigned to a detail protecting Scalise due to his place in Congressional leadership, returned fire and both were injured as well before Alexandria police arrived and provided aid. Williams and other congressmen ran to the dugout to take cover.

Williams was a standout outfielder and third baseman at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth from 1968 to 1970, and briefly played for the Atlanta Braves farm system.

Williams said he was hitting ground balls to Scalise on the field when he heard a sudden explosion, followed by more loud bangs in rapid succession. Two others were also injured during this incident. John Shimkus of IL and Erik Paulsen of Minnesota.

"Without the Capitol Police, we probably would not be here today", Williams said. "So he's tough as nails and we are all praying for his recovery". He says Scalise dragged himself into the outfield to get farther away from the shooting. Williams dove into the first base dugout.

And that's when Williams realized his own staffer, Zack Barth, was among those shot. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., removed his belt, which Williams used as a tourniquet to stanch the bleeding from Barth's leg wound.

U.S Rep. Chuck Fleischmann of Tennessee screamed out the emergency call to 911, per Williams. It seemed like it went forever. We had no arms, all we had were bats. Everyone else on the scene survived. He was shot in the calf by gunman James Hodgkinson, but managed to scramble to a dugout, where he hid with Williams and other members of Congress.

"'My family and I will be forever grateful, the thin blue line held today".

Thursday's game will be held at Nationals Park, where the Washington Nationals play.

State Department Secretary Tom Church has asked department engineers to look at how to improve motorist safety on US 550. It's baseball, it's America. Besides baseball, members of the two parties do not normally socialize much.

More than 20 Republican members from the House and Senate showed up for the 6:30 a.m. practice. On Wednesday night, the eve of Thursday's game, Doyle announced that the Democratic team had invited the GOP team to dinner at their club.

The congressional staffer wounded in the shooting at a congressional baseball practice Wednesday morning near Washington, D.C., is out of the hospital and recounting his harrowing experience.
