The prolific striker's future at the club was thrown into doubt last week when Portuguese newspaper "A Bola" reported that Ronaldo wanted to leave Spain after being accused of committing tax fraud.

The question of Ronaldo using tactics to get the club to pay for a possible fine makes no sense because he is not like that. The Madrid prosecutor said the case was presented to a local court.

Spanish prosecutors released a statement on Tuesday indicating that the 54-year-old used shell companies in the Virgin Islands and Ireland to hide profits.

This latest scandal has left the four-time world player of the year's future at the Barnabeu in doubt, as media reports say Ronaldo is unhappy that the Spanish giants did not back him as fully as he had hoped in his dispute with the taxman.

A number of elite players have been accused of fraud in recent months, including Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi.

Under Perez, Real Madrid have won three Champions League titles in four seasons.

Mourinho's management team - Gestifute - and Real Madrid did not immediately respond to CNN's request for comment.

Di Maria will not be spending any time behind bars despite being handed a prison sentence because any such sentences in Spain which are under two years in length are automatically suspended - providing the convcited party has no previous criminal record.
