One of the most memorable moments comes not from the TV series but from the Batman 66 movie, where West takes on a shark while dangling from the Batcopter on a ladder.

Robin, played by Burt Ward, gets the oceanic spray to Batman by performing a back bend manoeuvre, and before too long, the shark is dropping back into the ocean like a bomb. "He was and always will be our hero", his family said. "We'll miss him like insane", his family said on the actor's Twitter page.

But the high-profile role ultimately restricted West from playing different characters later on.

While West appeared in almost 50 films, the actor never escaped Batman's shadow.

Ben Affleck in a tribute to late actor Adam West said he exemplified "heroism".

Adams Outdoor Charleston controls numerous billboards in the area and announced that they would launch shortly after West's death. "It was hard for them to adjust to the level of 'darkness" that Burton's Gotham City explored but West's Batman that was neatly nestled between Keaton and the classic image of Batman from the DC Comics easily rekindled fond memories.

And judging by the outpouring of support across Hollywood for West after his death, we aren't the only ones saddened by it.

"I knew after 20 pages it was the kind of thing, the kind of comedy, I wanted to do", he said. You know, just as he's about to put her in (jail), Batman says to Catwoman, "You give me curious stirrings in my utility belt". In his post, Smith declared his love for West and said that his portrayal of Batman made the 46-year-old want to be "a good person when [he] was a boy".

"Typecasting is an enormous challenge and I think I had one of..."

"Batman" was the role he would remain associated with throughout his life. His film roles in this period were few and far between but included a part in the 1965 Three Stooges vehicle "The Outlaws Is Coming". But it was his performance in a TV commercial that caught the notice of the Batman producers. He leaves behind his wife Marcelle, his six children, five grandchildren and two great grandchildren. The camp aspect of the show either introduced adults to the Caped Crusader for the first time or rekindled the relationship to the character they once read as kids.

West was an American actor.
