Arsenal beat Chelsea 2-1 to win FA Cup

Wenger's future has been the subject of fierce debate for most of the season and he admitted after the FA Cup final success against Chelsea at Wembley that the uncertainty had had an impact on the season.

"The league wins, the cup wins".

Wenger's contract was set to finish at the end of the current campaign.

Finishing fifth and having to kiss goodbye to another last 16 defeat to Bayern Munich in next season's Champions League might well have been a bitter pill to swallow for Arsenal supporters.

The Chelsea manager bravely came out to face questions in the post-match media conference over how his league champions, strongly fancied to collect their second trophy of the season and complete the league and FA Cup double, capitulated against Arsenal.

Speculation over the Frenchman's future has been rife in recent months but despite a backdrop of supporter unrest, he has now committed to the club with a fresh deal that will extend his reign to nearly 23 years.

But crucially, the two-year deal agreed by Wenger in November remains in place and sources expect it to be signed if his authority remains unchallenged by any changes requested by Gazidis and the board.

The 67-year-old has been heavily criticised this season, with Arsenal fans calling for his resignation after their team failed to qualify for the Champions League for the first time in 20 years. I don't think they're going to be anywhere near the title.

Rather than blame Moses, Conte has said that the player is not a "cheat" but was most probably "tired".

One source said there may be a compromise where a new recruit, a director of operations, is given responsibility for analytics and scouting but with Wenger given reassurance that he retains full control of first-team affairs.

I just think it is such a silly decision to stay on.

"The best presentation [to show the board] is to watch the game", he added.

The Frenchman claimed the triumph was one of his proudest moments, alongside the 2003-04 Arsenal team that won the title without losing a single league game.

"And you would have to say it would serve them right, because there has been absolutely no forward planning for the day when Wenger finally left the Emirates.

We have played some games in a hostile environment and I never accept that".

"The behaviour of some people during the season, that is what hurts me most".
