Vatican protocol dictates that women should wear long sleeves, formal black clothing and a black veil during private audiences with the pope.

PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP, on his audience with Pope Francis.

That gift comes as Mr Trump has been outspoken in his talk of interventions in North Korea Syria and against Iran.

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said Wednesday that the Cardinal Secretary of State brought up climate change when meeting with Trump and encouraged him not to pull out of the Paris Climate Accord.

"It is my desire that you become an olive tree to construct peace", the Pope said in Spanish.

"Well, I will be reading them", Mr Trump said.

Later, on Twitter, he wrote, "I leave the Vatican more determined than ever to pursue PEACE in our world".

Under clear blue skies, Mr Trump, who said sharp words about the Pope during the U.S. election campaign previous year, received a tribute from the Swiss Guard in a Vatican courtyard when he arrived.

The Pope blessed a rosary for the first lady, traded jokes with the first daughter, Ivanka Trump and husband Jared Kushner, and handed out tokens to the President's delegation.

"What do you give him to eat, potizza?" the Pope asked the first lady, referring to a Slovenian treat. "One image in particular, of a grinning Trump next to a stone-faced Pope Francis, has gone viral".

The pope and the president were both elected as outsiders promising to carry the far-off voices of the forgotten to the centers of global power.

The Pope's gift left no questions about its symbolism, presenting President Trump with an olive tree medal crafted by a Roman artist that the Pope said symbolizes peace.

At the Vatican, while Mrs. Trump strictly followed tradition and protocol by wearing black and a mantilla, other high-profile visitors have taken liberties with their attire.

Trump's family members have featured prominently on his first overseas trip. Francis has made a calling card out of modesty.

Trump has used his Twitter account to weigh in on just about every political figure under the sun. "It's not Pope-like!" However, foreigners are considered exempt from that rule, according to the Economist. "In our talk, things will come out", he told reporters after a recent trip to Fátima, Portugal.

The US president sparked fears of an end to North Atlantic Treaty Organisation when he dismissed the world's biggest military alliance as "obsolete" while on the campaign trail and mortified the European Union by backing Brexit.

That is a far cry from his previous remarks about Trump.

"A person who thinks only about building walls, wherever they may be, and not building bridges, is not Christian", Francis said at the time.

Trump retorted that it was "disgraceful" for the pope to doubt his faith. "For a religious leader to question a person's faith is disgraceful", he said at a campaign rally in SC.
