Three UI football players have been officially charged after police say they were involved in a robbery.

"Three individuals entered an apartment masked and the victim recognized one of them by voice", Champaign police Lt. Dave Shaffer said. At least one of the men was brandishing what appeared to be a gun.

Police say the men were wearing masks and brought a gun which was later determined to be a BB gun.

Ziegler said police obtained statements from the trio that "implicates all three going into the room with masks".

The players, however, claimed that, according to first assistant state's attorney Steve Ziegler, they were merely pulling a prank on the 19-year-old dormitory resident.

Both charges filed Thursday are Class 1 felonies.

Here's the thing. home invasion is a very serious charge.
